Through A Cultural Lens: A Juneteenth Celebration

June, 17, 2022 | Theory Studios

Beck&Call Hospitality in collaboration with Gold Was Made Fa’ Her hosted our annual Juneteenth celebration honoring the photographic memory of Mr. Ray Carrington III and Mr. Earlie Hudnall, Jr.

Through A Cultural Lens was held at Theory Studios and consisted of an evening celebrating Houston’s premier black photographers and showcasing some never before seen photos from Mr. Carrington’s work.

Since starting Beck&Call Hospitality, the team has hosted more than 10 events and collaborated with many businesses in the Houston community. Through A Cultural Lens was a true culmination of our mission and hard work. Having this event right in the heart of the Third Ward community, where we hope to host our first bed and breakfast, collaborating with local businesses, and celebrating the legacy of two photographers who impacted Houston’s black community made this event truly represent Beck&Call Hospitality.

Thank you to our friends, family, and Jack Yates alumn for attending Through A Cultural Lens. Thank you to Bria, from Gold Was Made Fa’ Her, for assisting us with this event. Thank you, to our vendors for transforming and bringing the space to life. Finally, thank you to Mr. Ray Carrington III and Mr. Earlie Hudnall, Jr. for sharing your legacy.

Through A Cultural Lens
Interviews With Houston Businesses Who Are Pushing The Culture Forward Pt. 2

Sherrell Design Studio

Photographer: Madeline Harper (Left), Cate Black (Right)

Introduce yourself and what you do.

I’m Sherrell Neal, owner and Principal Designer of Sherrell Design Studio. I’m an Interior Designer here in Houston, Texas.

How would you describe your personal style? As an African American, do you feel your culture, the city of Houston, or your birthplace, Louisiana, influence your personal style?

Because I like to mix a bit of old with a little bit of the new— I call my style New Traditional! My upbringing between Louisiana and Texas have greatly influenced my personal and professional aesthetic. Being from the south, we can never share our stories and experiences without reaching into the past. It’s what makes the traditions of the south so colorful and engaging. From our food, our music, even our speech. I’m grateful for my southern heritage and how it has shaped my life and my design point of view.

Photographer: Micheal Hunter (Top & Bottom)

Beck&Call Hospitality’s goal is to open a bed and breakfast. Recently, we have wanted to discover the interior design style we want to have in the bed and breakfast. How do you recommend getting started with defining our style?

Mood boards!! Pinterest might seem overwhelming, but it’s such a great tool to organize your thoughts and come back to it later. Magazine clippings of your favorite places, foods, colors, even logos.

What are a few different ways we can incorporate our core values into the design of our space?

First, consider what is important to you. Ask yourself what my essential principles are, and then align them to the overall goal. In this case, it’s an experience, so create what you want others to feel, see, and remember. And above all, stay true to yourself! Don’t remove what you love from the equation, because they’ll love it too!

What do you believe are the most important design concepts and rooms in hospitality spaces?

Bathrooms! Believe it or not, they’re the first thing I look at when considering my home away from home. If it isn’t functional with well-appointed amenities, I’ll dread my entire stay. Also, the common areas or shared public spaces like dining areas and the entry or foyer. These are all part of the guest experience and shouldn’t be an after thought. First impressions are lasting impressions!

30 Lessons Learned Since Starting Beck&Call Hospitality https://www.yourbeckandcall.co/%slug% Wed, 04 May 2022 18:51:40 +0000 https://www.yourbeckandcall.co/?p=2286 Read More]]>

30 Lessons Learned Since Starting Beck&Call Hospitality

It’s no secret that starting a business is hard work. From the hours spent organizing events, meetings, touring properties, and planning out new ways to raise capital. However, through it all, the most valuable lessons have come from making mistakes and learning from them. Here are a few of the many lessons learned on the journey to opening a bed and breakfast.

Let's Be Honest...

1. Your friends are not your customer.

2. It’s okay to ask for help.

3. Charge what you’re worth.

4. Great things take time.

5. Everything you hear and see is not the truth.

The Breakdown

6. Building a standardized process can help streamline common procedures.

7. Think of it as a redirection instead of a rejection.

8. Always remember your “Why.”

9. Early stage business funding is essential.

10. Take time to analyze and reevaluate your systems and practices.

11. Build your ecosystem.

12. Use your resources to build connections. (Phone, Social Media, Networking Groups, Events, etc.)

13. Save your great ideas for the right opportunity.

14. Everyone won’t understand the goal.

15. Be transparent. Share just enough information.

16. Listen to advice, but only take what you need on your journey.

Dear Ceo,

17. Take care of yourself first.

18. Pray for patience.

19. Show appreciation to your support system.

20. Bloom where you’re at.

21. Your vision is never too small.

22. It’s okay to take a break. Your business will still be there when you return.

23. Continue to do the things that make you happy.

24. Do something that you’re afraid of at least once. For me, it was public speaking.

Friendly Reminder

25. Don’t be easily influenced.

26. Be more proactive. More doing, less talking.

27. Take advantage of every great opportunity.

28. Trust your gut.

29. Time is money.

30. Invest in yourself.

Through A Cultural Lens
Interviews With Houston Businesses Who Are Pushing The Culture Forward Pt. 1

In honor of Beck&Call Hospitality’s 2nd Anniversary, we wanted to recognize some of Houston’s small businesses owners who are pushing the culture forward and learn more about their values and how they built a community. We are currently in the process of conducting interviews, so please come back to this page to see more updates!

Porshae' Brown

Introduce yourself and what you do.

My name is Porshae’ Brown. I am a multi-million dollar producing real estate agent in Houston. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I left briefly to attend college at Texas Tech University, where I received my bachelor’s degree in media and communication. After college, I worked in advertising sales then transitioned into hospitality. While in hospitality sales, I brought in top producing corporate groups and leisure accounts such as Marriott and Hyatt. After being laid off in 2018, I sought out real estate. I’ve been a full-time realtor and entrepreneur since then and I haven’t looked back.

You’re a luxury listing agent, Airbnb host, and mom, how do you balance it all while continuing to produce high sale volumes?

Balancing life and work is and will always be a juggling act. Especially for an entrepreneur running a business and collecting additional streams of income along the way. I have to give all the credit to God and my wonderful support system. If it wasn’t for my strong belief and family, producing at a top level wouldn’t be as achievable.

Real estate is demanding and can easily be a 24 hour 7 days a week job in most cases. My number one priority is to be a mother to my beautiful daughter. Going into real estate, I knew my daughter was the reason why I had no choice but to learn how to become successful. Once I made my “why” my driving factor, the love for the business grew and so did my clientele.

Beck&Call has had the opportunity to attend one of your Art & Wine events, and it was a wonderful time! What is the process behind conceptualizing a cultural experience at one of your listings? Do you feel it helps build your community and attract more African American buyers and sellers?

I’ve always loved art and real estate. I got into art while attending Texas Tech and the city of Lubbock’s monthly art crawls. Once I made my way back to Houston, the museum district became one of my favorite destinations. When opportunities are presented where I’m able to merge the two worlds together, I try to create memorable experiences with local art curators such as Robert Hodge, whom curated the art displayed at our million dollar listing where we hosted a wine and art event you attended in January of this year. Showcasing local and in most cases black artists in a luxury real estate environment is a play on cross branding and marketing. It’s a win for both parties. Guests get to meet the artists, view new collections and pieces, all the while building a community within the art world and real estate. Art and artists are accessible along with real estate and the realtors that sell it. I want everyone to know you can obtain anything you want just by being within close proximity to others of like minds.

As you know, Beck&Call is planning to open a bed and breakfast within the city of Houston soon. Do you have any advice for African American business women looking to purchase a commercial property soon?

For any buyer, I’ll always suggest to weigh your financing options. As a minority owned business, there are so many resources out there to assist in the purchase and start up of any business. You can never apply to too many grants. Hiring a freelance grant writer would be a well paid expense as well. Commercial lenders are key resources into placing you in what you desire and can afford within your business’s budget. Oh and of course, finding the right real estate agent that can assist you throughout the entire process.

Vera Loo Presents

Introduce yourself and what you do.

Hiya, I’m Vera – the owner of Vera Loo Presents, a small soap shop offering soap and body care for the comfiest skin. I’m a creator, soap artisan, and lover of media and business.

In your story you mention your great-grandmother, Luescndie Jackson Jones from Mansfield, Louisiana, which means legacy and family are very important to you. Can you elaborate more on the story behind your signature BUTTAH BAR?

Yes, “Madea” as my family honors her. A Mother in rural Louisiana, doing everything from sharecropping and crafting clothes from flour sacks to crafting soap from scratch using herbs and botanicals found on the land, and being good with a shotgun! Ha! She was a no-nonsense goddess who lives on through each of us somehow, I believe.

Buttah Bar’s inspiration comes from recipes passed down to me through storytelling via my grandmother. As I discovered and began soapmaking, I shared it with my family – I learned that my great-grandmother would make soap for her children in rural Louisiana. I dived deeper and asked all the questions, and here we are. Making Buttah Bar for VLP feels like the stars aligning. I feel like I’m honoring her every time I craft soap, and I thank her often. Buttah Bar has evolved into what it is today, a gentle, soothing soap bar for sensitive and dry skin, but its foundation is simple recipes used decades ago for the elders of my family.

How important is incorporating legacy and tradition into your brand & products?

I think that true legacy is innovation, and tradition is transparency. As I build this brand and work to craft unique products, I infuse heritage by being intentional and enjoying myself. Enjoying the process as a young black businesswoman is revolutionary in and of itself. I will push as far as I can with my inheritances and discoveries along my journey. Sharing what I can along the way. You’ll feel this when using VLP’s products.

What has always resonated with me is how despite all opposition, Madea’s legacy is still this diverse group of children, grand, and great-grandchildren who have become some of Houston’s top educators, artists, business owners, and community contributors. I want to focus on being present and letting the future flawlessly align with God’s plan.

You’ve donated product and attended many pop-up events, how important is community to the Vera Loo brand? How do you continue to maintain and grow a community while also running the business?

Community is essential to the Vera Loo brand. Initially, I started creating for quirky black girls with sensitive skin like myself. Soaping was an outlet during a very dark time in my life too. So, I just created a brand that made me feel like I had this magical safe space to exist and escape—those who supported me early on were of the same community, and it grew from there.

The goal is to give back to causes and grassroots organizations doing the actual work in the community that resonates most authentically. So far, VLP has donated soap and body care to Youth Education, Domestic Violence, and LGBTQIA+ organizations. I am working to make these efforts more recurring, but growing and running a small business can become overwhelming. I balance by planning proactively and making sure I’m active in the community as a member first. You don’t know what’s needed unless you’re out in the community. Sometimes, the contribution isn’t a product. Often, small business owners can contribute by being an advocate or supporting local creatives, peers, initiatives, etc.

Brunch With Beck&Call Hospitality

One of our team goals for 2022, is to connect more with our community and create deeper relationships with those who are investing in Beck&Call. The team came together to organize an intimate brunch with a couple of ladies whom we’ve been connected with online, but have yet to truly introduce ourselves.

March is also Women’s History Month, so we decided to celebrate by purchasing black women-owned food and beverage brands to incorporate into our brunch menu and cocktails.

Our menu included: Homemade Waffles, Crispy Chicken Tenders Drizzled with Hot Honey, and a Breakfast Casserole.

Black-Owned Wine Tasting

In honor of Black History Month, the Beck&Call Hospitality team organized a black-owned wine tasting. Each member chose a wine and course pairing to share. All wines were purchased from. OST Liquor, a black-owned liquor store in Houston.

Check out our tasting menu and wine pairings down below!

For our appetizer, the House of Brown Chardonnay was paired with a shrimp salad topped with crispy cornbread croutons. Brown Estate Vineyards is the first and only Black-owned estate winery in Nappa Valley. The Chardonnay has flavors of guava, gooseberry, lemon verbena, and tropical fruit. This wine pairs best with light appetizers and seafood.

The main entrée, Papadeaux’s Pasta Mardi Gras, was paired with Other People’s Pinot. This wine is from Maison Noir Wines in McMinnville, Oregon. André Hueston Mack founded the winery in 2007 and adds a personal perspective on wine subculture. Other People’s Pino has flavors of cherry, ginger, wood, and spice and goes wonderfully with cheese and seafood.

For the final course, dessert, ErmaRose Winery’s Strawberry wine was paired with a decadent chocolate brownie topped with strawberries and ice cream. This sweet Strawberry wine is made with fresh strawberries and pairs well with any rich dessert.

Beck&Call Friendsgiving

What better way to celebrate the end of Beck&Call Hospitality’s crowdfunding campaign than with a friendsgiving dinner!

The team came together at Kaylon’s childhood home to design a minimal and rustic tablescape with a warm color palette and wood textures throughout. The goal of this shoot was to create an inviting atmosphere on a backyard deck. Beck&Call acquired chairs and linen from Aztec Rentals. Decor and napkins were from our local Target, HomeGoods, and TJ Maxx

Beck&Call Events provided the floral and vases, and The Print Experience designed and printed custom aprons. Finally, the shoot was captured by local photographer Cameron Washington.

Check out our tablescape and food spread down below!

Our menu included: fried chicken and biscuits from , green beans, seafood pasta, kale salad, potato salad, and for dessert: a butter pecan bundt cake inspired by Curly Girl Kitchen’s recipe

Our cocktail: Spiced Cranberry Punch came from Half-Baked Harvest
